Guardians

I will, as pearls on a string, be lifted in the hands of kings

- An aphorism on a hand painted playing card from the XV or early XVI century -

The Guardians are the guards who watch over each house or suit, in a deck of cards which constitutes this series of paintings. I am developing this series into a complete, playable deck of playing cards.
Playing cards originated, according to early literary references, in China. Then proceeded to spread in popularity through India, Persia, Egypt and Northern Arabia. The Arabs introduced playing cards to Europe in the second half of the 14th century.
I like the parallel of the card game, being synonymous to the “game” of life; especially within the context of global politics: tactical, strategic with an element of hazard and risk mixed in, and each game evolves like a story.
